Nico Naess Transferred to SC Heerenveen

Crew SC announced yesterday evening the transfer of Norwegian player Nicolai Naess to Eredivise side SC Heerenveen. Link.

The Dutch side currently sits in 9th out of 18 teams in the Eredivise, with two ties and a win on their early season. Last year Heerenveen finished as well in 9th.

The move hit most Crew fans by surprise this morning.

Although it seems to have apparently caught no one by surprise at Crew SC; as Naess is already at SC Heerenveen giving interviews.

SC Heerenveen have signed Naess for two years with the option for a third. Link.

"We've been following Nicolai for a long time and we are pleased to see that he is strengthening our selection now. Although he's only 24, Nicolai already has a lot of experience. He's a player who can play multiple positions, both in midfield and can defend," said Heerenveen's manager Gerry Hamstra.

Crew SC doubled the investment they made in Naess apparently.
In my opinion, Naess was our best defender overall over the last year. But, opinion wasn't shared lately by Crew SC.

Over the last month, Naess had been benched and was the fifth choice center back after Mensah, Abubakar, Williams, and Crognale.

Not that I think there is a great distance of talent between him or any of the other four. Yet, still thought there was more in his future and in a couple more years could've tripled that investment.

But, sometimes its best to take a deal when you have one.

We still are deep enough at center back and he wasn't playing currently.

Further, Eredivise is a step up. As a result, I'm sure he isn't upset about the move.

In addition, I'm sure freeing up an international spot was a factor.

Columbus has 11 spots and had 10 (now 9) internationals. But, some of those extra spots will disappear by next season.

I'm sure Columbus would rather spend it on someone farther up the field if Naess isn't starting.
