One surprise for Panama, was the arrival of a new U-20 head coach in Nelson Gallego right before the preparation for this tournament.
From the following article:
Coach Nelson Gallego replaced Leonardo Pipino in the Under-20 selection as manager for Panama. Gallego said he did not make the list for the World Cup and it will be a difficult, complicated tournament.
Gallego who took the team's direction on the Medellin tour, led the evening practice at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez said: " I did not even know when to deliver the list, the list has no analysis, there is no time to cry or anything like that, there are like 4 players that I do not even know. How can I make a list with players that I do not know? Impossible that type of thing."
"They felt a shock in the group as they came working the same way with the same people and are surprised with the decision that was made, had to talk to them, a few more had feelings than others, but have been assimilating and now is to go forward and to make a good campaign, to fulfill a goal that is to reach the world cup which hopefully can be fulfilled .
"Those who were in Medellin did a good job, Ronaldo and Cristian I know them, Rodríguez arrives on Tuesday, they are important reinforcements that will make this team perform well."
The U-20 team worked on Monday with 19 players on the tactical defense-attack side.
The group that was in Medellín were joined by Cristian Martínez of the Columbus Crew, striker Ronaldo Cordoba of Tauro on Monday and Jose Luis Rodríguez of the Gent of Belgium was expected to arrive on Tuesday to join the rest of the players in practice by Wednesday.
The youth team will resume training on Tuesday at 4 pm at Luis 'Cascarita' Tapia, on Wednesday they will have a practice match against U-17 and travel to Costa Rica on Thursday to debut on Saturday against the United States in the premundial.
