12.18.2012: IN- Believe It Or Not Jelen Still Crew Target

12.18.2012: IN- Believe It Or Not Jelen Still Crew Target
By Ryan Kozlowski
Crewture.com

This Summer, Ireneusz Jelen was speculated to be a Polish target that Robert Warzycha would try to bring in.

It was speculated by nobody with a legitimate source at first, instead the rumors began by Crew fans taking a shot in the dark (both at bigsoccer.com and here on Crewture) based on clues dropped by the front office

These Crew fans concluded in their "transfer window calculus" that Jelen is struggling in France, he's Polish and Warzycha is too, Jelen has good experience, and we needed someone who could score.

Turned out a French website ran with the rumor that was not mentioned anywhere else, and sooner or later either Jelen or the Crew said "ok, what the hell" and made some contact.

Or, more likely, Warzycha had his eye on the Polish NT player all along (similar to his connections that almost brought Maciej Zurawski to Columbus four years prior under Schmid)..

But, after Jairo Arrieta and Federico Higuain came in instead of Jelen, and combined for 14 goals and 11 assists in 31 overall games to end the season, one would think the Crew would be satisfied and wouldn't need Jelen or anymore strikers?

Right? Wrong.

This is from Polish Sports Website, WP.PL on December 14th, as it appears Warzycha is keeping the Jelen to Columbus door open:

Warzycha spoke to Ireneusz Jelen in the Summer, but then there wasn't a transfer. Warzycha said:
"We will return to the subject of Irek. In the summer I invited him to test, did not come. Winter transfer is possible, but is not limited to Columbus. Also other MLS teams looking for free assailants, who achieved something in Europe. A big plus is the fact that for Irek you do not have to pay."
"One unsuccessful round can not cross out the achievements of the player.  He played in Lille, which was champion of France and Auxerre. He also appeared in the Champions League. Made his mark. Such transfer would not be buying a pig in a poke. He showed that he can score goals. Now you need to create the conditions for him to do it" ends Warzycha.

Before the Fall transfer window, Jelen transferred to Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala of the Polish 1st Division (Ekstraklasa) but failed to score in 7 appearances.

Good thing about that is the 33 year-old Jelen's price has probably come down even more after not scoring in Poland

Another Polish Coach, Richard Komornicki, for Switzerland side FC Luzern is also interested. Either way, Jelen said he wants to play in a foreign country..

And at least Jelen is off of the "I want to stay in France" thinking; as that's what kept him away from Columbus the first time.

Perhaps? Być może?

12.17.2012: Trapp Will Have Chance To Win DM Role

12.17.2012: Trapp Will Have Chance To Win DM Role
By Ryan Kozlowski

Wil Trapp, the 19 year old phenom, is one of the top stars in a packed Crew Academy of talent.

Crew Technical Director Brian Bliss got the Gahanna, Ohio native signed with Columbus on December 13th, denying Portland Head Coach Caleb Porter's offers and convincing Trapp that Columbus made more sense than Europe at this point.

The oft injured Danny O'Rourke just now was signed with Columbus for 2013 as well.

O'Rourke, 29, has only been involved in 27 games out of a possible 76 the past two seasons with Columbus.

Chances are with O'Rourke only signed up for 2013, that his job will be to help with the transition of Wil Trapp to the pros; whether he knows it or not.

Also, with Chris Birchall out of the Crew's plans, it's possible that Trapp and O'Rourke might work together as the two DM's for 2012.

O'Rourke has been the consummate pro for Columbus as another hometown talent and with Trapp looking up to Danny O'Rourke as a Crew fan, it could be a good combo..

Also, one of these homegrown players for the Crew have to start showing some results.. Ben Speas, Matt Lampson, and Aaron Horton haven't had much of an impact.

Guys like Trapp, Matt Wiet (who could be the one to take the place of Balchan on the depth chart), and a second year Speas need to make some contributions.

Not every HG needs to be a five year project, otherwise what's the point of signing?

I think Trapp will get a chance to show himself straight away in 2013.

Bliss and Warzycha have to give Trapp a chance to sweeten the pot, otherwise there's a lot of places the 19 year old could go.

12.17.2012: OUT- Mirosevic Headed Back To Chile?

12.17.2012: OUT- Mirosevic Headed Back To Chile?
By Ryan Kozlowski

Milovan Mirosevic is currently still under contract with Columbus for 2013.

But, he has told Chile website El Mercurio"My reality is that I have a valid contract with Columbus Crew for another year, but obviously that if Catholic call me, I'm willing to talk . I can not rule out an early return to Chile."

And apparently Catholic Manager, Martin Lasarte, is more than willing to talk:

"Mirosevic is a very important player, in terms of football and experience. It's good for him to be available. I know there is an economic issue. But, if it were possible to fix it, so be it."

From 2008-2011, Mirosevic scored 46 goals in 108 games for Catholic. In comparison, Mirosevic had 4 goals in 26 games for Columbus (2 of them penalties) in 2012.

Mirosevic was an important player in 2012 and has ability, but started the year as the most important acquisition in Columbus's arsenal and mid-season was pushed behind Higuain and Arrieta in importance.

Mirosevic didn't define himself in 2012. But, the Crew and their fans would like to have him as another piece in the starting eleven, with Higuain and Arrieta, in 2013.

But, the funny thing is, wouldn't it be the Crew's decision to release Mirosevic from his contract responsibilities? Yet, both Mirosevic and Lasarte talk like the only issue is whether Catholic have the funds for Milo.

Unless the Crew already okayed Milo leaving One Black & Gold Boulevard.

May be a crowded midfield with Duka, Gaven, Trapp, Higuain and even Speas seeing more time. But, still Mirosevic is a very good option?

Stay Tuned.
