8/2/2010: Crewture Was Correct, Crew Trialist Is Andres Mendoza

Schelotto, Renteria, and now Mendoza? The Crew are going for the latin flair in their attack.

**First off, I was going to do a post-game review of the Crew's 3-1 loss to Chivas USA on Saturday, but it was so ugly that I'm just going to leave it to some ratings that will be up later tonight and move on to the Philadelphia Union game this Thursday. The Crew will probably be looking to move on quickly as well, happy to only have a five day wait until their next game, instead of the usual seven.

**Now with that out of the way; last Thursday, after I heard the Crew had an unnamed Peruvian trialist on the way from CrewXtra, I took an educated guess :-) that the Crew's Peruvian trialist would be Andres Mendoza; a 32 year old national team striker with good experience in Mexico, Belgium, and Turkey. I turned out being right, as today The Dispatch got the nod to post that the Peruvian striker on trial with the Crew is Andres Mendoza.

The Columbus Crew also released Othaniel Yanez before the August 1st cutoff. Yanez was the one Crew player with a free release, extension period that lasted until August 1st instead of July 1st like the rest of the Crew players (under the terms of the new CBA where each team can mark one player, after July 1st, for release by August 1st without paying him for the entire season). With Yanez cut, that roster spot opens up for Mendoza, if he grasps the opportunity.

Mendoza had a short statement today:
"It's very different here," Mendoza said in Spanish. "But I am happy to be here. I want to stay in Columbus."

Well, if El cóndor(Mendoza's nickname in Peru which means substantial muscles, lol) pans out like Sergio Herrera, the Crew have stated that the club has other lines in the water; whether it's Mendoza or someone else, the Crew will sign a striker in the next few weeks.
