5/2/2010: Crew Still Not Pretty, But Efficiently Getting Points

Lenhart gives Crew a draw in tough environs.

"It hasn't been the prettiest but we're finding our way," Lenhart said.

No doubt about that as I would rather see the Columbus Crew play an attacking and more dominating style of game. Or I would at least like to see them play at a level like the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls are playing. Further, with 2 more goals (bringing his total to 10 on the season) and an assist we could really use someone on the Crew that is playing out of their skin with something to prove, akin to Edson Buddle.

Overall, the 2010 Crew play an extraordinary boring game. They play ugly, there is no flair, and it's just a very grind them out, workmanlike approach. Despite the ugly, Crew fans will take the tie in Seattle especially when their club was thoroughly outplayed in front of 37,000 screaming fans.

The Crew last night, after an early Seattle goal, pulled even with a last gasp effort in the first half from Danny O'Rourke, who crossed a beautiful ball that whistled straight onto Lenhart's head for an easy flick past legendary keeper Kasey Keller. The Crew, despite looking like they were playing at altitude after eating 3 Big Mac's, held on throughout the second half- even after Danny O'Rourke got sent off the field again for two yellow cards. As a side note, someone should tell Danny O'Rourke (who has looked like one of our best players throughout this season) that he is more of a help to us on the field, then off of it.

Despite all the ugly from the last few Crew games, the Crew are doing quite alright on the formula of winning at home and tying on the road. As the Crew have two wins at home this season and two ties in Seattle and Dallas. Further, the Crew have two games in hand on nearly all of the rest of the league. So, if they were to win those two games in hand the Crew would be at 14 points, only one and two points back of the Galaxy and Red Bulls respectively. They still have to win those games-- but so far based on how anti-sexy the Crew have been playing in 2010, second place overall in the East and third overall in MLS, despite having two less games, is nothing to frown at.

But, I would have a better grin if the Crew could figure out how to bring their swag back from the 2008 season. As this team looks like they're limping towards every result they get in 2010.
