10/14/09: Alejandro Moreno's Venezuela Falls Short

Moreno played 74 minutes for Venezuela tonight, as Vinotinto falls just short in qualifying.

Alejandro Moreno and his Venezuelan counterparts had a chance going into the last two games of qualifying against Paraguay and Brazil to fight there way to the fifth playoff spot in CONMEBOL. After one of Venezuela's best yet performances overall in qualifying, they didn't have enough as the Vinotinto lost 2-1 on the road in Paraguay on Saturday. The loss on Saturday meant that Venezuela would, at 21 points, need to beat Brazil 14-0 to overcome Uruguay on goal differential, also at 24 points.

That wasn't likely in the cards and Venezuela tonight fought for a 0-0 draw in Campo Grande.

Alejandro Moreno came on in the 64th minute of the Paraguay game, playing 26 minutes plus stoppage time. Moreno followed that up with 74 minutes last night against Brazil. It should be interesting to see if the Crew go with the likely worn out Moreno this Saturday against D.C. The Crew may just save Moreno and most of their starters for the more important game away against Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
