8/4/09: Should The Crew Play 2 Strikers When Schelotto Is Healthy?

A situation that Robert Warzycha is probably thinking about right now is if he should change his line-up when Guillermo Barros Schelotto is ready to play again. What do you think? Should the Crew keep playing with one striker up top and Schelotto as a second striker? Or should the Crew play with two strikers and have Schelotto supporting them? There are many questions that are going to have to be answered, soon.

There are a few formations that could work well or not so well with the Crew. They could continue using a 4-4-1-1 as they did when Schelotto was playing. They could use the formation they are using now, 4-4-2, and have Schelotto as a striker. As many people have pointed out a 3-5-2 (or 3-4-1-2, whatever you see it as) may work as well. Or maybe a 4-3-1-2 could do well as keeping 4 defenders may be wise. What would you use?

Crewture Poll
Should the Crew play two forwards in front of Schelotto, when the legend returns?

The positives with a 4-4-1-1 is that it worked well with the Crew last year and it won them an MLS Cup. The negative side to it is that this year its not so effective. I don't know why, maybe its because other teams know what to expect or because we have not had a consistent line-up this year by missing many players due to injury or national team call-ups.

If the Crew continue using a 4-4-2 it could work out well but you can't keep Schelotto out of the line-up. He would have to be one of those strikers alongside Lenhart, Garey, or Moreno. Would it be as effective as it's been with Lenhart and Garey if Schelotto does play there?

A 3-5-2 with Schelotto supporting the 2 strikers up top could be really good for the offense. As 2 strikers right now is benifiting really well and Schelotto could improve it with his magic touch. But defensive wise, Im not sure. First off, that would mean the 2 strikers and Schelotto would not be coming back to help out a 3 man defense. Plus, Hejduk and sometimes Padula like to help on offense and make overlapping runs. What if there would be a counter attack? It would leave about 2 defenders and maybe 1 or 2 midfield players helping out on defense.

Using a 4-3-1-2 could be something different aswell. Having Carroll as a defensive midfielder and then Rogers and Gaven on the wings with Schelotto supporting 2 strikers. The Crew would still have 3 players not coming back to defend but 4 defenders would be more stable. Plus, right now we have a little more depth on defense than we do in the midfield(In my opinion).

So what do you think? Do you have another formation that can work better than what I have mentioned? I would hate to be in Warzycha's shoes right now as I would not know what to do.

  1. ---Lenhart----Garey----

I feel that Lenhart and Garey are not big enough stars to try and do their own thing. They aren't selfish. So that means teamwork. And Schelotto is the definition of teamwork! So the Bash Bros and Schelotto to support sounds like the greatest idea in the world to me. Think of it. 20 more goals with Schelotto assists on all of them!

On the other hand, I don't see why we keep pushing Schelotto to be a striker. I thought he was an awesome Midfielder. Wonderful passing with the ability to score. Sounds like a midfielder to me.

  2. Anon... Defensive ability is also key, winning balls in the air is something else. Both of those in his age GBS is lacking. On top of that, I don't get why O'rourke becomes a bench player simply because GBS is back, the guy was a starter all last year and other then a few stupid mistakes in 1 or 2 games has been invaluable as a utility player.

Defense wins championships, and Schelotto and Moreno at forwards got us there last year, having Schelotto up top this year only makes sense.

  3. I agree with HSH_B... No reason to take out players that have worked hard all year. To say that O'Rourke is worth sacrificing for the Bash Brothers is a bit ridiculous.

We should play exactly how we should play every time Schelotto is healthy, a 4-4-1-1. The only thing I see the Crew getting out of the past couple of weeks is that what we are doing right now is available come Champions League. SO, for MLS, play with Moreno and Schelotto, and switch in Garey with Moreno occasionally. For CL, play with Garey and Lenhart and, if we do get this Renteria guy, incorporate him in both CL and MLS. We are in a great position with our forwards. Warzycha just needs to play this out the right way.

  4. if i had to pick it would be:

*our line-up has not been consistent enough to try this. last year this was the 2nd best offense in the league. i have nothing against brunner but o'rourke is the speedster back there and he works his butt off for the team
