7/8/09: Crew To Sign Chilean Fenerbache Defensive Midfielder Claudio Maldonado?

This is from MLS Brasil:
Chilean Claudio Maldonado, known for playing in Brazil for clubs such as Santos and Cruizero could play defensive midfield for the current champion of the MLS, Columbus Crew. The player of 29 years can close business with the North American team soon. A fan-site of the Fenerbah├že club says that other clubs of Major League Soccer have interest in the player, but the Ohio club has stepped in the front to close the business with the Chilean.

Maldonado is the captain of the Chilean national team, who are currently in first place in South American qualifying. It's an interesting rumor since the Crew were mainly looking for an attacker and not a defender. But, the acquistion would make sense since the Crew have been looking for a partner for Carroll in midfield since Moffat went down. Should actually be a hell of a player in MLS from looking at his track record.

But, this might be just a case of Fenerbache fans speculating that Maldonado is headed to the Crew because the Crew are MLS Champions.

We'll see.

Video of Maldonado:

Crew's lineup with Maldonado:

First off the bench: Brunner in defense, Ekpo in midfield, & Lenhart up top.
