7/5/09: Crew Give Trial To Gambian Assan Jatta

From Shawn Mitchell's "Crew Xtra" blog:
That mystery man expected to join the Crew for a look-see next week? It's Assan "Bierhoff" Jatta, a 25-year-old from Gambia that FC Dallas had an interest in last summer. He has played in the Belgian second division and most recently with Gambian club Steve Biko FC.

After starting his career with Steve Biko FC. Jatta signed a contract in 2006 for just relegated SK Lierse of the Belgian second division. Jatta was sidelined with injuries for the whole 2006 season but started the 2007 season well, scoring in Lierse's second match. However, as the 2007 season wore on Jatta became surplus for Lierse(who have a stable of strikers that includes former Fulham player Tomasz Radzinski) and was loaned to K.F.C. Verbroedering Geel of the Belgian third division. Apparently, Jatta struggled in the second and third Belgian divisions as he tried to get a contract with FC Dallas at the end of the 2008 Belgian season. However, FC Dallas passed and Jatta went back to the club he started with in Steve Biko FC for the 2008-2009 season. Being passed up by Lierse, Verbroedering Geel, and FC Dallas has to make you wonder how successful this trial will be?

But, apparently Jatta is on the rebound, as Jatta is the Gambian league's highest scorer for the just finished season. Jatta scored 11 goals in 19 appearances for Steve Biko FC. As it seems not many goals are needed to become the leading scorer in Gambia as Schelotto has 10 goals before the halfway point of this MLS season. So, not sure if that is too exciting either.

Jatta also plays for the Gambian national team. He was dropped in 2008 because of a lack of playing time in Belgium. But, apparently he has regained his form by the fact that he is Gambia's leading scorer.

So I guess we will see how it goes. At least Jatta will be used to wearing yellow and black, here is Lierse's jersies:

And, here is a complicated video of Jatta in action:
