7/15/09: Former Crew Player Danny Szetela Heads To DC United

"Dood, I'm like so happy, obvi." Danny Szetela moves to DC United.

Danny Szetela played 26 games for Serie B side Brescia Calcio this last season. Brescia Calcio finished fourth with 67 points in Serie B, just a point away from third place and promotion. Recently, Brescia decided that Szetela, who scored one goal during last year's campaign, was not in their plans for the next season and their next promotional push. Szetela was also dropped by the team that owned him, Racing Santander, when Szetela returned from his Brescia loan. With this disappointment, Danny must have decided that trying to find another team in Europe wasn't worth the time and decided to go back to MLS.

Tonight, Szetela went through the tediously dreadful allocation process and was taken by second in line DC United as FC Dallas decided to pass on the Clifton, New Jersey native. The move to DC United has to be making Ives Galarcep, NY's sports blog extraordinaire, just amazingly happy. Galarcep was upset when Szetela was sent to Columbus in the first place, now Danny is being sent to NYRB's biggest rival DC United.

Making the allocation list like this:
1 Dallas
2 Colorado
3 Kansas City
4 Chivas USA
5 New England
6 Toronto
7 Real Salt Lake
8 Chicago
9 New York
10 Columbus
11 Seattle (Kasey Keller)
12 Houston (Felix Garcia)
13 San Jose (Bobby Convey)
14 Los Angeles (Gregg Berhalter)
15 DC United (Danny Szetela)

This is great news for DC United and not such great news for everyone else. Crew fans can testify to this, as DC United thoroughly dominated the black and gold two weeks ago at CCS without Emilio, Fred, Moreno, Jankovic, and two others. Looks like the deepest team in MLS, just got a little deeper before the playoff run in the tightly contested East. Ggreat!

Also, looking at that allocation list I wouldn't expect much hope for us to land Stern John if he comes back to MLS. I doubt 9 teams will pass on him and I doubt that he will be worth the trades to move down.

One more thing, if you dislike Szetela, here are some fun pictures to look at.
