6/6/09: Crew vs. Wizards Preview

Crew face the Wizards and Al Pacino double Claudio Lopez.

The Columbus Crew(barring what TFC does, as hopefully TFC implodes today against the LA Galaxy at home) could jump into second place in the standings with a win over the Wizards tonight on the baseball field. Columbus will have to deal with a tight field and won't be able to spread Kansas City out as they like to do with Ekpo and Rogers. However, Columbus has had their success at Community America Ballpark, much more success then they ever seemed to have at Arrowhead. Columbus last season demolished Kansas City 3-0 at Community America Ballpark during the regular season and then came back for a last second tie from Clutch Lenny in the away playoff fixture, of the home and away against Kansas City. As a result, the Crew seem comfortable with their away surrondings in the barbecue capital, and if anywhere, Community America Ballpark would be a nice pick for the first away win of the season. The second monkey the Crew has yet to get off of their backs.

Here is some exclusive preview footage:

Wtf? Except the score will be 2-1 for Columbus.

Also, I would expect Noonan to start in replacement of Moreno who is with Venezuela on international duty. But, Warzycha says it's an open race on who will replace Moreno for today's game. "Lenhart and Garey have different qualities than Noonan," he said. "Pat covers the space with speed. He's a smart player. He favors combinations, one-twos. With Lenhart and Garey it's different, especially Lenhart. He wants to fight against the defenders. He'll have more presence in front between two defenders."

If Noonan doesn't start, I would expect it to be Lenhart's turn in the rotation to get a start. Lenhart has positive feelings about Community America Ballpark. His last minute or two on that pitch was his shining moment of the 2008 season.

Also, both Garey and Noonan have already received their chance to start so maybe it's Lenhart's turn, although I think Warzycha will find it hard to keep Noonan off the field with his precise assist last game in Seattle (video below). If Noonan had another good week in practice I would expect him to start. Especially, since everyone has been interested to see what Schelotto can do with a forward with a little speed, Noonan is much quicker than Moreno. I know I'm sort of interested to see what can come from a Schelotto & Noonan partnership, at least for a game.

The Crew have continued their success against Kansas City at home this year. Their first win and the team's last meeting concluded with a 3-2 win for the Crew.

Outlook: Kansas City will be gunning for the Crew as the Crew in the last two years have gotten the better of the Wizards. However, I would expect Greunebaum to have his best game of the year as he will be in front of family and friends as he grew up 10 minutes away from where Kansas City plays.

I expect a goal from either Noonan or Lenhart, along with a goal from Schelotto. Crew win 2-1 and sneak into second place as TFC stumbles at home.

CREW- Andy Gruenebaum - Jed Zayner, Eric Brunner, Chad Marshall, Gino Padula - Danny O'Rourke - Emmanuel Ekpo , Eddie Gaven, Robbie Rogers - Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Pat Noonan.

Wizards- Kevin Hartman - Lance Watson, Jimmy Conrad, Aaron Hohlbein, Matt Besler - Jack Jewsbury - Davy Arnaud, Kevin Souter, Michael Harrington - Herculez Gomez, Claudio Lopez.

  1. Actually DC has 19 points so we'd still be 3rd.
