3/8/09: Crew U-13 Juniors Win A Tournament; Other News

A picture of the Grand Valley Crew Juniors winning the tournament in 2006. According to their website the tournament included 6 out of the 7 most prestigous clubs for the age group. Now the Worthington U-13 Crew Juniors have won it.

**From the Zanesville Recorder, belated as the tournament occured Feb. 14th to the 16th:
ORLANDO, Fla. - Ross Mathews of Norwich, a seventh grader at East Muskingum Middle School, helped the U-13 Columbus Crew Juniors Gold soccer team win the Walt Disney's President Day Tournament.

Mathews, a left midfielder, helped the Crew go undefeated, beating the Scott Gallagher Portugal team from St. Louis in the finals 1-0 in overtime. The team will play in the Buckeye Premier League Elite Division this spring.

The Worthington Crew Juniors didn't just win the tournament, they demolished the competition scoring 12 goals while only letting in 1. I haven't heard of us winning much yet at the lower "U" levels, so glad to hear that we have some history of winning in a prestigous tournament for the age group. Usually it's all about the U-18's. Here are the results and standings table. Good to see the Crew(or the parents) spending a pretty penny to send these thirteen year old kids to a tournament at Walt Disney. I think the Crew's commitment to youth development will pay off some day.

**Eddie Johnson has been in Europe for over 2 years and has finally scored for Cardiff City through a deft first touch. :-) I wonder if he said to the Doncaster fans, "you make me rich."

I spent two hours looking for the link to the pictures from the Columbus Crew vs. FC Dallas 2005 U.S. Open Cup game with no luck, anyone got them. Wanted to post them along with the text "Eddie Still Sucks."
