2/25/09: Crew Allocation Money From Seattle Unveiled, But No Money Left

Great stuff by Shawn Mitchell this week:
The Crew received $100,000 in cash and allocation money from the Seattle Sounders in exchange for the Crew’s waiving of a non-compete clause in Sigi Schmid’s contract that allowed the former Crew coach to be hired by the Sounders.

The team had a small amount of allocation money remaining in its coffers after last season and every team got $125,000 to spend on bonuses and transfer fees for this season, but much of the combined fund has already been spent, with a sizable portion going toward the contract of MLS defender of the year Chad Marshall.

With Marshall, designated player Guillermo Barros Schelotto and the bulk of the senior roster returning the Crew has little wiggle room under the $2.3 million salary cap. Barring a major trade, which is unlikely, the only new additions to the downsized roster will be at the bottom of the pay scale.

Okay, Luchador, Palermo coming to the Crew just isn't feasible. :-)
