1/3/2009: Will The Crew Trade Up For A First Round Pick?

In the best draft talent wise in years for MLS, the Crew's first selection doesn't occur until the end of the second round, pick #30. The Crew are unlikely to find a pure talent that late in the draft, so the question is will the Crew move up? And, for who?

Trading up to get attacking midfielder Baggio Husidic for example may be a good move for the Crew. Attacking midfielder Husidic would make a good understudy for Schelotto, who is only expected to lead the Crew midfield for a year or two more. Husidic could also plug in if the injury bug effects Schelotto. The 6'1 Husidic has impressed scouts with his combination of size, speed, and skill according to Ives.

A second reason to move up for the Crew is Steve Zakuani. The Crew staff has probably looked over striker Steve Zakuani a time or two over the last couple of years as Zakuani played collegiately just up the interstate at Akron University.

Zakuani played for the Arsenal youth system between 1997-2002 and as this highlight video shows can reak alot of havoc in the offensive third:

Zakuani would be a good and cheaper answer to a lot of the concerns of Crew fans with their strikers. As some believe that Moreno, Lenhart, and Garey will not be enough to repeat and to score consistently in CONCACAF. A lot of fans feel that one more striker is needed, and Zakuani would be a cheaper and possibly more realistic answer than Palermo.

But, it's likely that the Seattle Sounders will snatch Zakuani up at number 1 and are not likely to trade for such a position except if it's for another good piece of Sigi's former team. The most likely trade to me seems to be with Toronto FC who has three picks in the first round and may look to offload at least one for some proven talent as the pressure is on them to win now.

So, what do the readers think? Should the Crew try to move up through a trade of some players or allocation money? Or just hope to find a diamond in the rough ala Lenhart late in the draft and look for other talents away from the draft?
