1/2/09: Crew Related Sort of News

News about former Crew players, even Brad Guzan? Confused, read below.

Former Crew player Simon Elliot 34, who has been out of contract with Fulham since the Summer and hasn't played since is on trial with SPL side Motherwell. Elliot made 13 appearances shortly after being signed by Fulham, but hasn't seen first team action in two and a half years.

I guess the Crew are getting credit for the development of every American player who ends up overseas, from the Birmingham Mail, talking about the beautifully named Aston Villa:
"It was all part of a £46.3million investment in players during the course of the year.

There were other sizeable acquisitions in Curtis Davies, whose loan was made permanent from Albion at a cost of £9million.

Carlos Cuellar arrived from Rangers for £7.8million, Steve Sidwell from Chelsea for £5.5million, Luke Young from Middlesbrough for £5million, Nicky Shorey from Reading for £4million, Brad Friedel from Blackburn for £2.5million and Brad Guzan from MLS side Columbus Crew for £750,000. Wayne Routledge was the first to arrive, on January 30 from Tottenham for £1.25million."

Now as you may know Guzan never played for us, except for that time he muffed a Rogers goal. I imagine the Birmingham Mail mix up went sort of like this in their editing room,
Birmingham writer: "Who did Guzan play for in the MSL?"
Birmingham editor: "I don't know many MSLL sides but I have to figure it's that team that won the cup and had their fans brawl with West Ham and have that captain who drinks beers on the back of that American vechile, a pickup truck."
Birmingham writer: "Lemme yahoo search." *pause*. "Columbus Crew."
Birmingham editor: "Columbus Crew."

A little news on their competition at Aston Villa as well.
